Pray

Sometimes it feels like there are no words, no words to describe our pain, anguish, confusion or frustration. A line of letters strung together cannot hold a torch to our feelings. Have you ever felt at a loss for words? I know I have. This happens sometimes in prayer; maybe it’s happened to you too? At a point like this it seems we are only left to keep silent, but, in fact, it is during times where we don’t know what to speak to God that we need to pray the most.

The Bible tells us that when we don’t have the words, we should pray to the Holy Spirit to intercede for us and pray for the things we need but can’t seem to pinpoint.

Romans 8:26-27

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

Or maybe the problem for you isn’t that you don’t know what to pray, but you are afraid to truly be honest with God about how you feel. I have been at a place like this as well. The interesting things is before we even utter a word, God knows how we feel. He knows us, everything about us, but He wants us to come to Him as we are and in exactly the state we are.

I used to think that if I were honest with God about my emotions, He would be disappointed with me. But the truth is you cannot build a relationship without honesty. A relationship with God should be the most honest relationship we ever have. It’s like coming to a friend who knows exactly what you are experiencing and cannot wait to listen. Our Father delights in us and in order to strengthen our relationship with Him, we have to come as we are without barriers, pride or self-righteousness. You can’t hide anything from the God of the universe, for He has seen all our pain.

Psalm 56:8

“8 You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

So even if it’s just to speak the name of Jesus, pray. He is willing and able to bring you comfort in exactly the form you need.

The song “Pray” by Sanctus Real talks about the frustration we all face as Christians in trying to communicate our feels to God. But when it comes down to it, God wants the relationship no matter the mess. God wants our hearts no matter how far He must pursue us. He wants you, right where you are. And if all you can seem to utter is His Holy name, pray… because it is in Christ alone that we find refuge.

“Pray”

I bow my head to pray, I don’t know what to say
I’m not sure how to fix the things I’m dealing with
I’m in a desperate place, I need to share the weight
But I just don’t know how, to let it all pour out
Though I’m silent, my heart is crying
Cause I was made to come to You
So I pray
God I need You more than words can say
Right here in this moment
You know my heart, You know my need
You know every part of me
So even if it’s just to speak Your name
I’m gonna pray

I failed to find the time, but You’ve been calling out
I let the days go by as if I could live without
But it’s gotta be here now, I won’t be pulled away
Cause it’s just You and I, so let the world around us fade

As I pray
God I need You more than words can say
Right here in this moment
You know my heart, You know my need
You know every part of me
So even if it’s just to speak Your name
I’m gonna pray
I’m gonna pray

(Father)
Will You meet me here right now?
(Father)
I surrender, lay it down
(Father)
And every time I close my eyes
I know that I was made
To lift my hands and pray
I lift my hands and pray

You know my heart, You know my need
And every single part of me
So even if it’s just to speak Your name
I’m gonna pray
I’m gonna pray

You know my heart, You know my need
You know every part of me
More than words, You are my life
Take it as an offering
