Courageous

There are countless times in the Bible where the Lord urges His people to not be afraid.

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

To me, this command to not fear and the command to have courage are two different ideas. It is one thing to not be afraid. It is another to act upon that peace in the face of the unknown.

Hear me out, sometimes we as people are content, confident, though we do not step outside our comfort zones to take action. As the Lord commands us to not be afraid, I think He also prompts us to act on that peace, which comes only from Him. Then, we can take a stand against injustice.

Defined, courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain without fear; bravery.

I want to look at an example from the book of 1 Samuel in the story of David and Goliath. But before we get into the story about how the young man David defeated the heavily-armored Goliath, let’s ponder things we fear.

Are we afraid of failure? Well, the Lord does not view our failure in the same way we do, since He uses all things for His glory.

Genesis 50:20 “20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Are we afraid of those against us?

Joshua 10:8 “The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”

Though we stumble, we will never fall.

Psalm 37: 23-24 “23 The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; 24 though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

When we really reflect on our personal fears, we see that what makes us so afraid is that we are measuring our chances of success against our own abilities, not those of the Living God!

Deuteronomy 3:22 “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”

He is our source of strength. None can stand against a child of God!

So from the story of David and Goliath, the odds were not looking great to the Israelites when no one wanted to fight the large warrior. On his way to the camp where his brothers were stationed for battle, David saw the cry of Goliath for an opponent. The losing warrior would become the subjects of the other’s army.

When David heard the stand of Goliath, He thought not of his own strength, but of the strength of his God.

1 Samuel 17:45 “David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”

And with only his staff, smooth stones and a sling in hand, David defeated the hold of the Philistine army. Not only is this story a good reminder to point others to the strength of our God, but also evidence that the Lord works through the unlikely to do incredible things.

The world saw David’s size, but the Lord saw David’s heart! So with the strength of the Lord inside, David did not saunter, or walk or hesitate into battle, he ran, knowing the Lord Almighty would have victory!

1 Samuel 17: 48-49  “As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.”

What am I trying to say? When we know the source of our strength is not ours, but the Lord, we can be COURAGEOUS! We know the end of the story. The Lord will ALWAYS have the victory, no matter the odds. And He wants us to live in that peace!

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Lord, give us the strength to not measure the obstacles in our lives against our own strength. Help us to remember that You are the God who saves, the God who works through the underdog to accomplish mighty things for Your Kingdom. Teach us how to live in this peace as we go about our days! Prayer Requests

“Courageous”

We were made to be courageous
We were made to lead the way
We could be the generation
That finally breaks the chains
We were made to be courageous
We were made to be courageous
We were warriors on the front lines
Standing, unafraid
But now we’re watchers on the sidelines
While our families slip away

Where are you, men of courage?
You were made for so much more
Let the pounding of our hearts cry
We will serve the Lord

We were made to be courageous
And we’re taking back the fight
We were made to be courageous
And it starts with us tonight

The only way we’ll ever stand
Is on our knees with lifted hands
Make us courageous
Lord, make us courageous

This is our resolution
Our answer to the call
We will love our wives and children
We refuse to let them fall

We will reignite the passion
That we buried deep inside
May the watchers become warriors
Let the men of God arise

We were made to be courageous
And we’re taking back the fight
We were made to be courageous
And it starts with us tonight

The only way we’ll ever stand
Is on our knees with lifted hands
Make us courageous
Lord, make us courageous

Seek justice
Love mercy
Walk humbly with your God

In the war of the mind
I will make my stand
In the battle of the heart
And the battle of the hand

In the war of the mind
I will make my stand
In the battle of the heart
And the battle of the hand

We were made to be courageous
And we’re taking back the fight
We were made to be courageous
And it starts with us tonight

The only way we’ll ever stand
Is on our knees with lifted hands
Make us courageous
Lord, make us courageous

We were made to be courageous
Lord, make us courageous
